Kyneton
Historic · Relaxed · Good for couples
Piper Street is the reason: a bluestone strip of restaurants, a distillery and shops that hums at the weekend and settles back into a country town soon after. A river walk and the Macedon Ranges right behind it. A day, or an overnight built around dinner.
A weekend here might look like
- Morning: Piper Street - Kyneton's oldest street, a run of bluestone shopfronts from the 1850s and 60s now holding galleries, antique and homewares shops, cafes and some of the best eating in the Macedon Ranges. It runs from Mollison Street down to the Campaspe River, with most of the food and drink clustered at the top end.
- Lunch: Fook Shing - Named after an infamous Chinese detective posted to the goldfields, Fook Shing brings modern South-East Asian cooking to a historic Gold Rush-era pub on Kyneton's Piper Street. Red lanterns, exposed brick and polished floors set the scene, with cosy fireside couches and a deck for warmer days. Share plates built on fresh local produce, a strong list of local wines and craft cocktails, and a warm, knowledgeable team to guide you.
- Afternoon: Kyneton Botanic Gardens - Gardens reserved in 1858, with wide lawns sloping down to the Campaspe River and a heavy planting of old oaks, elms and ash. Seventeen trees here are on the National Trust's significant register, among them an unusual Chilean wine palm.
More to explore
- Campaspe River Walk - An easy, flat stroll along the Campaspe between Kyneton's 1850s botanic gardens and the racecourse, just behind the shops on Piper Street. The path winds past river red gums and old oaks and elms, over footbridges, and through a sculpture park showing work by local artists. Keep an eye out for ducks, parrots and ibis, and platypus in the water. Information plaques along the way tell the river's story, and there are picnic spots and barbecues if you bring your own.
- Country Cob Bakery - Kyneton - Follow the smell of warm pastry to Kyneton's most celebrated bakery. Cambodian-born brothers Chan and Ryan Khun have taken out Australia's Best Pie three years running, and the cabinet shows why: golden flaky pastry and generous fillings, from classic meat pies to curries and seafood that draw on their heritage. Vegetarian and vegan eaters are well looked after, and the sweets cabinet is worth a look too. Grab one warm, or take a box for the road.
- Prato - Set in Kyneton's old ice-works building on Piper Street, Prato serves pinsa, the lighter, crispier Roman ancestor of pizza, alongside seasonal Mediterranean share plates. The renovation keeps the industrial bones, with recycled timber floors, a fireplace, antiques and a pizza oven front and centre in the open kitchen. Start with a drink at the bar, then settle in for a long, shared lunch or dinner.
- Duck Duck Goose & Larder - Part cafe, part food store on Piper Street, Duck Duck Goose does fresh, wholesome breakfast and lunch in a lovely old building, with vegetarian and vegan options on a short, seasonal menu. Out the back is the larder, stocked with wine, pantry goods and gifts, so it's easy to pick up something to take home. Good for a leisurely lunch before a wander through the shops or the botanic gardens.
- Twenty 9 Piper - A relaxed spot at 29 Piper Street doing all-day brunch and lunch with good coffee, plus a hidden dog-friendly courtyard out the back. Easy and unfussy, and handy for a late start or a mid-shopping break on Piper Street.
